A male teacher from Great Brak River is facing an assault charge after allegedly beating an 11-year-old learner in front of the class.
Police officers from the Mossel Bay Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual offense unit arrested the teacher this weekend.
According to the police spokesperson, Sergeant Chantel Marais, the incident happened at the Great Brak River Primary School a week ago.
Marais said the grade 6 learner told police that the teacher hit him with a cane in the classroom in front of other learners.
According to Marais, the child kept quiet about the beating but told his parents about the incident two days after it had happened.
She confirmed that the child was taken for a medical examination after which the teacher was arrested.
The teacher was released on a warning and will appear in the Great Brak River Magistrate’s court on the 26 September.
