The South African Social Security Agency in the Eastern Cape says up until midnight Sunday nearly a million grant beneficiaries had received their money.
Sakhumzi Yawa, of Sassa in the Eastern Cape says this amounted to around R1.2 bn in pay-outs in the province over the weekend.
He told Algoa FM News Monday that the bulk of the weekend payments or around 58% were done through ATM's, while a further 36% received payment through retail stores.
Yawa said the remainder of grant beneficiaries either swipe their cards to make purchases or receive their payouts in cash.
"There's been a smooth payment process in the province. We managed to reach out to now almost 60% of our beneficiaries," Yawa said.
He said cash payments were being made on Monday adding that "we have not received any hinderances or challenges in the process".
Yawa said the only issues are regular matters they deal with in assisting beneficiaries with their deductions. He said Sassa has help desks at pay-points to assist the beneficiaries.
