A 21-year old Rhodes University student was rescued from the sea at East Beach, Port Alfred, on Saturday.
Spokesperson for the NSRI, Craig Lambinon says when their rescue duty crew arrived at the scene, they found that the young woman from Zimbabwe, was rescued from the water by a friend.
He says NSRI medics treated the student for near drowning symptoms at the scene, and later transported her to a local hospital.
Lambinon says she had reportedly been swept out to sea by a rip current while swimming, before her friend managed to help her out of the water.
