Grahamstown police probe rape of two children

Grahamstown police have confirmed that two cases of rape are under investigation involving two young children.

Police spokesperson, captain Mali Govender, says the charges were laid by the mother of a six year old boy and his seven year old sister.

She says the alleged rape of the girl occured on the Second of this month, while the charge related to the abuse of the boy was laid on Wednesday.

The incidents have also sparked a protest outside a local school where the focus has been on a teacher.

However, captain Govender told Algoa FM News that the matter is still under investigation.

"The details including the date, time and place of the incident is still unclear as several versions of the incident were furnished. This is normal with victims who have experienced an extremely traumatic incident. In order for an arrest to take place there had to be sufficient evidence linking the suspect to the crime. At this stage the suspect is not known and the investigative officer is in contact with the parents" Govender said.

Meanwhile, a parliamentary committee has called for severe punishment of people guilty of sexually abusing children and people with mental and other disabilities.

The chairperson of parliament's portfolio committee on Social Development, Yolanda Botha, made the call on Thursday following the recent gang rape of a mentaly handicapped Soweto teenager.

She called on the courts not to grant bail to child rape suspects.
