A 25-year-old suspect who tried to rob a woman at knifepoint in Gqeberha has died after the victim pulled out her own knife to protect herself.
A spokesperson for police Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says the woman was walking from Russel Road and turned into Elliot Street at half past seven on Tuesday morning when she was approached by an unknown man who struck up a conversation.
She says the man pulled out a knife and cut the strap of her handbag.
Janse van Rensburg says the victim pulled out her own knife and a struggle with the suspect ensued.
She says the 43-year-old woman sustained a stab wound to her hand but managed to stab the suspect in his chest.
He was declared dead at the scene.
Police confiscated both knives and opened an inquest docket.
