Gqeberha SAPS search for hit-and-run driver

Gqeberha police are investigating a case of culpable homicide following a fatal hit-and-run accident on Beach Road on Friday morning.

Police Captain, Andre Beetge, said the body of a 20-year-old man was found on the side of the road at around 6 AM.

“There is a strong suspicion that he was hit by a vehicle and therefore a case of culpable homicide has been opened,” he said.

Beetge said the deceased has been identified, but his name cannot be released until his family has been notified.

Anyone who may have information that could assist the police investigation should contact the police.

In recent years there have been several incidents of reckless and negligent driving on the road, particularly around nightspots.

In March 2020 Port Elizabeth police arrested a 25-year-old NMU student for reckless and negligent driving.

This followed a viral video of a motorist performing dangerous wheel spinning and hand-brake manoeuvres in the road.

In May of the same year, 20 -year-old Emma Boshoff was travelling down Beach Road at about 22.40 when she collided with a street pole.

She was declared dead on the scene.

While in May 2019  Kelvin Zirema, a Zimbabwean national, ploughed into two pedestrians on Beach Road killing, instantly killing a 36-year-old Nigerian national and causing a Zwide woman to lose her leg.

Zirema was acquitted of all the charges against him.
