A 59-year-old man appeared in a Gqeberha court for allegedly defrauding VWSA of R12 million.
Hawks Eastern Cape spokesperson, Captain Yolisa Mgolodela, said Christo de Jager, faces numerous charges of fraud and corruption.
She said he allegedly used his position as fleet manager at the Kariega company to hatch a scheme with an employee at a body repair company to do work for the company for which he was allegedly “paid on a monthly basis” for generating fraudulent invoices for the work.
Mgolodela said the matter was reported to the Hawks and an extensive investigation “revealed that during the eight-year period of the commission of the offence, 572 fraudulent invoices were submitted and paid for thus prejudicing VWSA more than R12 million for services not rendered. “
De Jager was arrested by the Hawks during the early hours of Friday morning and appeared in court where he was released on warning.
The matter was remanded to 23 March 2023 for legal representation.
