Gqeberha police have found abalone with an estimated street value of more than R1-million rand at a drying facility in Motherwell.
This, after a gas explosion at the premises on Friday night.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Pricilla Naidu says upon further investigation, fans, gas bottles, and 2 227 units of abalone were found in the house, which was rented out about six months ago.
She says no suspects were found at the scene.
The Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit in Kariega is investigating cases of malicious damage to property and operating an abalone processing establishment without a permit in terms of the Marine Living Resources Act.
The confiscated abalone was taken for storage by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment.
