Gqeberha man missing at sea at Herolds Bay

Wikipedia

A man from Gqeberha is missing at sea at Herolds Bay on the Garden Route after being caught in a rip current.

The National Sea Rescue Institute said their NSRI Wilderness duty crew was activated following multiple eye-witness reports of a drowning in progress at Herolds Bay.

Spokesperson, Craig Lambinon, said two local bystanders and a surfer had entered the water in an effort to assist a male, aged in his twenties.

He said several other suffers and a person using a bodyboard swam after the man, but he said he disappeared under the water before they could reach him.

Lambinon said an extensive search was then undertaken with various role-players involved.

He said a helicopter returning to George Airport was also deviated to assist in the search.

“Despite an extensive air, sea, and shoreline search there remains no sign of the missing man. Police have opened an investigation,” Lambinon said.

He said NSRI Wilderness and George Fire and Rescue Services will assist the Police Dive Unit in their ongoing search on Sunday.

Lambinon also commended the locals and surfers for their efforts in trying to save the man.
