Gqeberha man in custody for ‘harassing’ ex on social media

File

A 44-year-old Gqeberha man appeared in court on Friday on a charge of crimen injuria, who allegedly made “pejorative and derogatory” overtures towards his former wife on social media platforms.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said Bernard Chetty was arrested after his 34-year-old former wife laid a charge at police in Lenasia in Gauteng, where she now lives.

She says a warrant for his arrest was subsequently issued and Chetty was arrested on Thursday after police approached him in connection with another case which he had opened against his ex-wife in October.

Naidu said Chetty was remanded in custody and will be transferred to Gauteng where he will appear in the Lenasia Magistrate Court on Monday.

“As the investigation unfolds, further charges may be added against him,” she said.

Acting Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Brigadier Thandiswa Kupiso called on communities from all walks of life to join hands in the fight against all formers of gender-based violence.

“We need to call upon men to desist from committing such cruel and degrading acts on women. It is time for women to stand up against the abuser and demand justice for their demeaning and shameful treatment, it is time to break the silence,” she said.
