A 55-year-old Gqeberha man appeared in the city’s Magistrate’s Court for allegedly trying to defraud the Road Accident Fund of R2.2 million.
Hawks Eastern Cape spokesperson, Captain Yolisa Mgolodela, said Mzwandile Msutwana was arrested on Tuesday by the Serious Corruption Investigation team of the Hawks on Tuesday.
She said Msutwana, through his lawyer, lodged a claim for more than R2.2 million, alleging that he was the victim of a hit-and-run accident in February 2021 when he was apparently hit by a car while walking in Madikane Street which did not stop.
Mgolodela said the RAF’s Forensic Investigation Division “picked up the red flags from the claim” and the matter was referred to the Hawks in December 2022 for investigation.
She said, “investigations revealed that Msutwana, on the said date and as per Dora Nginza and Livingstone hospitals records, was injured at his house where fell as a result of being intoxicated.”
The RAF was nearly prejudiced in the amount of R2.2 million.
“Msutwana was arrested on 25 April 2023 and made his first court appearance at Gqeberha Magistrate’s court on the same day. He was released on warning,” Mgolodela said.
The matter is remanded to 25 May 2023 to set a trial date.
