Enyobeni Tavern owners, Siyakhangela and Vuyokazi Ndevu, were back in the East London Magistrates Court on Tuesday, where they stand accused of selling alcohol to underage persons and contravening the Liquor Act.
Charges were laid by the Eastern Cape Liquor Board against the husband-wife duo in June last year after 21 young people died under mysterious circumstances in their tavern.
NPA Spokesperson Luxolo Tyali said at this point there are no additional charges, and all affected parties will be the first to know if any additional charges relating to the deaths arise.
Meanwhile, neighbour, 67- year-old Mncedisi Kwinana took the stand and said life has been peaceful since the tavern was shut down by the Liquor Board last year.
He says the smell of urine no longer clings to the air and that his yard has since been cleared of all the empty liquor bottles.
Commenting outside the court, Liquor Board Spokesperson Dr Mgwebi Msiya says he is shocked to learn how neighbours lived while the tavern was still operating.
He says it is also a shame that the community filed affidavits with the police just a few days shy of the incident.
The Ndevu’s will be back in court on the 23rd and 24th of May.
