A 40-year-old Gqeberha man has been jailed for life for raping a mentally challenged girl and the attempted rape of another teenager.
Police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, said Sakiwo Mxotwa, was sentenced in the city's Regional Court on Thursday to a further eight years on the attempted rape charge.
She said he was convicted in December last year of raping the 13-year-old mentally-challenged girl in July 2013 and the attempted rape of a 14-year-old girl in December 2017.
Mxotwa was arrested after the first first incident and released on bail two years later. In 2016 when his psychology report was available, authorities were unable to trace him.
Janse Van Rensburg said he was arrested again following the attempted rape in 2017 and was on bail for the duration of the trial.
She said Acting Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Brigadier Thandiswa Kupiso welcomed the life sentence and commended investigating officer Detective-Sergeant Luzuko Pehlo, of the Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit in Gqeberha.
