A Nelson Mandela Bay doctor who was found guilty of defrauding the Road Accident Fund (RAF) to the tune of R2.2 million was sentenced to correctional supervision and community service.
The 66-year-old Dr Tony Moodley was convicted in December last year and subsequently sentenced in the Port Elizabeth Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Tuesday.
Dr Moodley orchestrated fraudulent RAF claims on behalf of 83 patients who were involved in a head-on collision between two buses in Walmer in June of 2007.
Some of the patients did not qualify for a payout, however, claims were lodged with local Attorneys who claimed on behalf of the passengers from RAF.
Consequently, cash to the combined value of R2,25 million was paid out for all claimants and Moodley received kickbacks from the undeserving ones.
Hawks spokesperson Captain Yolisa Mgolodela says the RAF uncovered some inconsistencies which led to an investigation.
Dr Moodley was arrested in July 2015 and released on warning the same day.
The court ordered Dr Moodley to do 576 hours of community service at Livingstone Hospital and he will be under correctional supervision for the next three years.
