Good start to 2016 mohair summer season

The first mohair sale of the 2016 summer season produced a welcome surprise on Tuesday.

Mohair SA said the average market indicator increased by 16.6% from the previous sale to close at R254.20 per kilogram.
Managing Director, Deon Saayman, said there was strong demand for all types of mohair, with 98 percent of the more than 72 078 on offer being sold.

A highest prices of R490 was paid for a bale of 25 micron super style kids mohair.

Saayman said that the steep increase "was a bit of a surprise" also very positive for the industry and mohair producers.

"We must remember that the weakening South African currency had a huge impact on those prices.  But, we are also experiencing very good demand globally for the mohair fibre.  The demand for the stronger end of the clip currently from, specifically the East, is very strong," he said.

Saayman said buyers are competing actively to fill their orders which he said was very positive for the season lying ahead.

Mohair SA said compared to the previous sale prices were as follow:
Kids (winter) up 7.5%
Young Goats(winter) up 6.5%
Fine Adults up 13%
Strong Adults up 15%
Average up 16.6%

The second summer sale is scheduled for 1 March 2016.
