Higher Education Minister, Blade Nzimande, says there's been good progress made in stabilising Walter Sisulu University.
The institution was placed under administration in the wake of a financial crisis that led to staff not being paid.
Speaking to the media in Nelson Mandela Bay on Tuesday, Minister Nzimande said the administrator, professor Lourens van Staden, had been able to stabilise WSU's financial situation in a short space of time.
He said they are laying the basis for a much stronger institution.
"Obviously there is ongoing work that we have tasked the administrator with, we need a proper and thorough forensic investigation, because some of the problems may actually have arisen out of that but also we want the administrator to look at the possible continuing impact of the merger, not with the view of saying we must undo with the merger, because some of the problems in this institution are also historical" Nzimande said.
