Big-time surfing is set to bypass Jeffrey's Bay this year after being a regular stop on the ASP World Tour for more than a decade.
The 2-million-dollar Billabong Pro was watered down to a six-star rated World Qualifying Series event last year.
Now, that 6-star rated event does not even appear on the ASP World Tour's fixture list for 2013.
Billabong's Chad D'Arcy says the surfing industry is undergoing a major shake-up globally, but that its by no means all doom and gloom for JBay.
"Obviously for 2013 it is a little bit uncertain at this stage. There is quite a big transition happening in the sport through the governing body at ASP, obviously there are big plans to bring it back to what everyone wants, that being a WCT from 2014 onwards. There are very serious discussions happening on international board level to make that happen. I am fairly certain next year and the year to come we will get back to watching the best surfers competing at J'Bay" D'Arcy said.
D'Arcy says Billabong is currently in discussion with various stakeholders to present some kind of event in July - with an announcement expected by the end of the month.
He says Billabong continues to support surfing in South Africa, having brought back its junior series this year.
The first event was held in Durban two weeks ago.
The second leg takes place in East London on the 6th and 7th of April.
The third event will take place in Cape Town in August with the series final at Cape St Francis at the end of September.
