The humanitarian organisation, Gift of the Givers, said it would be delivering hundreds of oxygen machines to health facilities in the Eastern Cape.
Founder Dr Imtiaaz Sooliman said the CPAP machines were locally produced by the CSIR and funded by the Solidarity Fund. It was approved by the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority.
"Gift of the Givers appreciates the opportunity to distribute 12 000 of these machines free to everyone on the EC Health Group and nationwide," he said.
Sooliman said their medical teams also tested the machines which he said assisted in saving lives.
He said 900 CPAP machines would be loaded on Tuesday from the warehouses of Acacia Medical for delivery to the Eastern Cape.
"Requests have been pouring in from hospitals overrun by patients requiring oxygen deliver," he said.
Sooliman said the CPAP machines were dependant on reliable oxygen infrastructure at hospitals and clinics.
He added that public hospitals, clinics and ambulance services were welcome to contact the organisation for the free supply of these machines.
"At this critical point in dealing with the severity of the second Covid-19 wave, these CPAP machines couldn't have come at a more opportune time. A gigantic "thank you" to all who made this possible. Lives are going to be saved in numbers," Sooliman said.
