Buffalo City is calling on residents not to listen to fake social media posts urging them to resist the installation of smart meters.
City spokesperson Samkelo Ngwenya says the latest incident was reported in Mdantsane, where they are rolling out the smart water and electricity meter programme.
He says the programme is aimed at ensuring that there's accurate meter reading as well as billing.
He says consumers who miss out on these new technology installations will bear the consequences.
Over 96 000 smart water meters have already been installed in households across the metro and 23,318 smart electricity meters.
Ngwenya says the project kicked off in October 2019 and is being installed at no cost to the consumer.
He says with the high crime rate it is understandable that residents will be suspicious of strangers walking into their yards and therefore their staff members are easily identifiable.
He says officials will wear identifiable attire, travelling in a car with a BCM sticker.
Ngwenya says they will also have Municipal ID cards with their photographs, full names and ID numbers.
