German tourists fall victim to PE protesters

Two German tourists fell victim to the ongoing protests next to Motherwell in Port Elizabeth when their vehicle was stoned by protestors when they returned from Addo Elephant Park on Monday night.

Police Captain Andre Beetge says the incident happened on the Addo Road at around 7pm.

"According to the couple, 46-year-old Jochen Gass and 50-year-old Anja Engelmann, they were forced to stop when they drove up to a burning tyres barricade," Beetge said.

"When they attempted to turn the car around, their vehicle was pelted with stones by protestors."

Beetge said only Gass was slightly injured by a stone that hit him on the right side of the neck.

The couple plans to resume their tour of the Garden Route to Cape Town on Tuesday.

Motherwell Police have condemned the attack on the couple and the setting alight of another four trucks in Ikamvelihle as well as the barricading of Addo Road with burning tyres.

The protests were sparked by the Police escorting the Sheriff of the Court to affect eviction orderds in the area earlier in the day.
