PE housing protesters torch four trucks

Protesting resident from the Motherwell area of Port Elizabeth have torched four trucks as resistance to evictions continue.

Police spokesperson, Captain Andre’ Beetge, said that the violence on Monday followed when the Sheriff of the court was escorted by police to effect evictions of people occupying municipal land illegally.

Eviction notices were served on people last week and the Sheriff moved in on Monday to execute the court-sanctioned eviction order.

“Police in Motherwell condemned the use of incendiary devices to set alight another four trucks in Ikamvelihle as well as the barricading of Addo Road with burning tyres,” Beetge said.

“SAPS acknowledge that it is the right of citizens to protest, however that must be done within the prescripts of the law,” he said.

“Damaging of vehicles and blocking of the road is illegal and will not be tolerated,” Captain Beetge said.

Last week Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality also condemned the actions of residents saying that illegal land invasions would not be tolerated.
