A 21-year-old George taxi driver is behind bars after being arrested in connection with several recent armed robberies at shops in York Street, Pacaltsdorp, and Conville.
Police spokesperson, Sergeant Chris Spies, said the arrest formed part of an ongoing investigation.
He said last Monday, four men, two of whom were armed, entered a shop in York Street at around 7 pm and threatened the complainant.
They took an undisclosed amount of cash, cell phones, and cigarettes before fleeing.
Spies said a Toyota Quantum minibus taxi, believed to belong to the suspect, was linked to this incident.
He said vigilant George Detectives later noticed the taxi in the central business district and followed it to Thembalethu where the driver was arrested and the vehicle seized.
“Further investigations linked the suspect to a number of robberies where shops were robbed in Pacaltsdorp and Conville,” Spies said.
