George municipality to respond to residents demands within 14 days

The George Municipality will respond within 14 days to a list of grievances presented to mayor, Charles Stander, on Wednesday by resident of Tembalethu.

Several thousand people marched under the banner of the ANC in the Southern Cape to the municipality to complain about service delivery issues.

George Municipal Manager, Trevor Botha, says they gave "the assurance to the march organisors that we will make sure that we will answer, firstly, all the requests contained in the memorandum."

"Then we will also look to give effect to those issues or matters that we can give effect to and any other issues we will provide them with the necessary answers," he added.

Meanwhile, ANC spokesperson, Putco Mapitiza, said that they expect the mayor to give his report back to residents in Tembalethu itself, after they marched upwards of seven kilometres to the municipal offices.

He also says that they intend lodging a formal complaint with police top brass in George as well as the Independent Police Investigative Directorate after stun grenades were used to keep the marchers in order.

No one was injured or arrested during the march which police said went off smoothly overall.
