George Municipality labels vandalism 'self-defeating'

Paving stolen at Erf 325 East

George Municipality

George Municipality says the vandalism of paving and manhole covers from the roads in parts of the city, that have been serviced for future housing development, is a huge concern as it deprives citizens of deserving services.

It says the vandalism by members of the public is self-defeating because the infrastructure that has been built in the future residential area of Erf 325 East and the Metro Grounds Developments areas is meant for the development of the community.

The Municipality says it also takes away from the public funds.

"Manhole covers on the Metro grounds which are also being vandalised, pose a danger to small children and animals," said Lionel Daniels, acting director for Civil Engineering Services.

"We plead with the community to assist us by reporting these incidents", he said.

George Municipality offers a reward of R2500 for information that leads to the successful conviction of vandalism in a court of law.

It says witnesses will have to go on record to the authorities, giving their names and contact details to testify, but their identity will be protected.

Report to 0860 044 044 to be eligible for the reward.
