An 81-year-old man has died in a fire at the frail care unit of an old age home in Riversdale.
Police spokesperson, Captain Malcolm Pojie says police were called to the scene at Huis Ou Meule in the early hours of Friday morning.
He says emergency teams had to evacuate 66 elderly residents and three were admitted to a local hospital for smoke inhalation.
Captain Pojie says they suspect that the man died of smoke inhalation but a post-mortem must still be conducted to determine the cause of death.
The cause of the fire is not yet known and forms part of the police investigation.
Riversdale police have opened an inquest docket.
