George municipality has 8 months of water left


The George Municipality has about eight months worth of water left after the dam levels dropped slightly in the last week to a combined capacity of 67.79%.

Municipal Spokesperson Athane Scholtz says section 2B water restrictions still apply in George and it's surrounding areas:

  • Handheld watering of gardens using a hose with municipal water: even-numbered households Mond-Thurs: 3pm-5pm/ uneven-numbered households Tues-Frid: 3pm-5pm.

Prohibited use of Municipal water:

  • Mechanical irrigation (sprayers)
  • Watering sports fields except for golf course greens, bowling greens and cricket pitches, daily 3pm-5pm
  • Filling up of swimming pools
  • Washing cars with a hose (buckets allowed, rainwater encouraged), except for commercial car washes
  • Cleaning of outside surfaces using a hosepipe

Rules and regulations

  • "OWN WATER" signage must be displayed where applicable and must be proven on request by municipal officials.
  • Applications for exemption of some restrictions may be considered on merit.
  • Report water leaks and burst pipes to 044 801 9262 or after hours at 044 801 6300, as soon as you notice them.

Fines for the contravention of water restrictions in the George municipal area have been implemented as part of measures taken to manage the city's water security.

Repeat offenders can expect to pay up to R4 000 per offence or land up in jail for up to six months if found guilty.
