A young George mother is claiming millions of rands from the George State Hospital as well as from the Western Cape health department.
She claims it was the negligence of doctors and nurses that caused her son to be born with cerebral palsy. A court date has yet to be set.
Sunelle van Heerden of medical malpractice law firm CP van Zyl says when 18-year old, Lezine Heunis was admitted to the George state hospital on the first of January 2006, she was already in labour.
Van Heerden says it was only after she was in severe distress for close on 48 hours that doctors finally did a caesarean - but by that time her baby son Leshaan, had suffered brain damage as a result of oxygen deprivation.
