George Mayor denies speaking to journalist about closing Voëlklip Road

The Executive Mayor of George, Leon van Wyk has denied media reports quoting him as saying that he personally requested the closure of the Voëlklip Road in Herolds Bay.

This follows the recent tragedy where an elderly couple was involved in a murder-suicide earlier this month.

The Mayor expressed his concern and displeasure at the comments published in the first edition of the Sunday Weekend Argus on the 10th of April.

Mayor van Wyk says at first they thought the journalist misquoted him, but he in fact never spoke to any media about the Voëlklip Road,

He says it would now appear that the person the journalist spoke to misrepresented himself as the Mayor of George.

The Municipality said they view this in a very serious light and will investigate the matter.

Van Wyk is opposed to the closure of the road given that it has repeatedly been highlighted in tragedies, involving road users themselves.

Although several people have taken their lives at this spot, the road remains on private property, and the request for such closure must be done by the property owner.

The municipality has implemented several safety measures at the Lookout Point in Herolds Bay.

IOL again on Wednesday morning ran with the story, where journalist Brandon Nel is quoting Mayor van Wyk.
