General workers arrested for fire at EC Premier's office

Two general workers suspected of starting the fire at the office of Eastern Cape Premier, Phumullo Masualle, last month are out on bail.

King Williamstown police spokesperson, Captain Siphokazi Mawisa, said 54-year-old Mpandlane Vellem and 39-year-old Simphiwe Sunduzayo appeared in Zwelithsa Magistrate's last Friday.

She said they have been charged with arson and attempted murder because people were in the building when the fire started.

Mawisa said they were out granted bail of R500 each and will return to court on 28 August.

The fire at the administration building of the office of the Premier also gutted a garage.

At the time  the Office of the Premier said that the epicentre of the fire was in a storage area for supply chain management documents, some of which were part of an inquiry into possible irregularities in procurement by government.

The Eastern Cape Premier had been at the ANC's policy conference when the fire broke out.
