DA claims "fake news" - EC Health Dept

The Department of Health in the Eastern Cape says reports of it dropping funds for medical students are "fake news".

The Democratic Alliance claimed on Wednesday that Bachelor of Emergency Medical Care students from Nelson Mandela University are having to seek external funding if they want to continue their studies.

The Health Department's Sizwe Kupelo says, however, that the reports are not true but refused to discuss the matter further when contacted by AlgoaFM News.

DA shadow MEC for Health, Celeste Barker, meanwhile claims that the Health department owes the 16 students who are due to graduate this year, R90 000 in fees each.

She said the students were informed in June of the department's depleting budget.

Barker said the Health department is in breach of a four year contract and that the DA will be seeking legal advice.

Barker said for the sake of the students, something needs to be done.
