Gelvandale cop testifies against alleged New Kids gang member

A uniformed officer attached to the Gelvandale police station testified in the murder trial against a New Kids gang member in the Gqeberha High Court on Tuesday.

Claudio Calvert, 22, is accused of killing Cameron Rayston Daniels in Baatjies Street in Helenvale on 15 July 2022.

The murder happened near the Helenvale Resource Centre.

Warrant Officer Andre Tiervlei testified that he was at the scene of the crime on the day Daniels was killed.

Tiervlei and his partner had reported for duty at 6 am.

They were busy with crime prevention duties in Martin Street, in Helenvale when they heard two gunshots go off in the area.

Upon further investigation, members of the community reported that the gunshots emanated from Baatjes Street, from behind the shops.

Tiervlei said on arrival at the scene, the victim was lying in front of the gate of the Helenvale Resource Centre, his head full of blood.

They made haste to Leith Street upon hearing that the shooter had fled in that direction.

"We saw four guys that came from a known drug post at number 50 A Leith Street.

"This is also where members of the New Kids Gang stay and hang out," Tiervlei testified.

The four males were searched but police could not find any weapons on them.

Calvert was not one of the four.

Back at the crime scene, paramedics had declared Daniels dead at the scene.

He had been shot multiple times.

According to Tiervlei, police found three empty cartridges next to his body.

One of the windows of the resource center had a bullet hole and bullet fragments were found inside the yard," said Tiervlei during his testimony.

The trial continues.
