Gqeberha police are investigating a case of attempted murder after a truck driver and his colleagues came under fire shortly after a service delivery protest on Rocklands Road on Monday.
Video footage of the complainants escaping the gunfire has since been widely circulated on social media.
Police spokesperson, Captain Andre Beetge said the service delivery protest started at 07:00, but police had managed to disperse the crowds at 10:00.
When the truck driver and his two colleagues drove by at around 11:50 four men ran onto the road.
Two of the suspects were armed with firearms while another brandished a wooden beam.
One of the men then fired shots at the truck in an attempt to stop it. The truck driver carried on driving.
"The truck's windscreen was damaged, but no further injuries were sustained," said Beetge.
In the video, five men are visible when the truck driver and two of his colleagues approach.
Two of them step onto the road, and gunshots are fired.
Upon realising they came under fire, the driver's panicked colleagues can be heard encouraging him to keep driving.
In footage seen from inside the truck, the workers are seen cowering as bullets hit the truck's windscreen.
The driver is seen holding on to the steering wheel while cowering in a bid to get to safety.
