Gauteng taxi driver arrested in EC for reckless driving

A Gauteng taxi driver has been arrested in the Eastern Cape on a charge of reckless driving.

Eastern Cape Transport Department spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, said the man was arrested this weekend by provincial traffic officers for overtaking at least seven vehicles on a solid barrier line.

He said the driver, in a fully-loaded vehicle, was travelling from Johannesburg to Queenstown.

Binqose said he will appear in court on Monday.

Meanwhile, he said provincial traffic officers are on the ground trying to ensure that motorists obey the law.

This as the road death toll for this past weekend alone stood at around 20 fatalities, including the deaths of seven people when a taxi overturned on Saturday between Cradock and Tarkastad.

"The numbers don't lie.  We can only hope and pray that it does not get worse," Binqose said.
