OK Energy has submitted an Environmental Management Programme for its proposed oil and gas exploration off the coast of Port Alfred.
The Petroleum Agency of South Africa accepted the company’s application for an exploration right in March this year and it must now submit the Environmental Management Programme for consideration and approval by Minister of Mineral Resources Susan Shabangu.
The exploration area is located offshore of Port Alfred and covers approximately 9 300 square kilometres from the shore-line to about 100 kilometres out to sea in water depths of up to 4 000 metres.
Port Alfred and Kenton-on-Sea are the closest towns to the exploration area.
It will take about three years while the company investigates the sub-sea geological structures and no additional work is anticipated during this three-year period.
