Garden Route house robbery suspects nabbed

Police have arrested five suspects they believe could be behind several house robberies in the Garden Route.

Police spokesperson, Sergeant Chris Spies, said the arrests were made on Thursday.

He said SAPS members from George and Knysna as well as private security stopped and searched a vehicle on the N2 in the early hours of the morning where they found a stolen watch and housebreaking implements.

Spies said when the vehicle was searched again at the police station, they found a firearm, jewellery and an undisclosed amount of cash hidden in the engine compartment.

“Further investigation revealed that the firearm was stolen during a housebreaking incident in Riversdale.”

He said the investigation also took the team to the house of a 39-year-old suspect in Kwanokuthula in Plettenberg Bay where a plasma TV, expensive jewellery and a camera were found.

All five suspects will appear in the Knysna Magistrates’ Court soon on charges of housebreaking and theft, possession of stolen property and possession of housebreaking implements.

“The 39-year-old suspect is facing additional charges of the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition,” Spies added.

He said police are also investigating whether they could be linked to other burglaries reported recently in the Garden Route.
