Garden Route District Municipality to challenge Festive Season beach ban

The Garden Route District Municipality said it was unhappy about the beach ban announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Monday night and now want this to be changed.

The District Municipality held an urgent meeting on Tuesday and submissions to the Western Cape cabinet to be followed up with the national government.

GRDM executive mayor, Memory Booysen, said their plea was for the beaches to remain open and for restrictions to relaxed and changed to the same as those restrictions imposed on Kwazulu-Natal.

He said in terms of the restrictions, KZN beaches only have to be closed on 16, 25, 26 and 31 December 2020.

He said the next step was for these submissions to be communicated to the National Command Council, with the backing of the Western Cape Government.

"I am adamant that we can still get through this if we avoid crowded places, close-contact settings, confined spaces and enclosed spaces," Booysen said

He appealed to "Garden Routers and tourists" to adhere to the golden rules of keeping safe and adhering to the new regulations.

"We agree wholeheartedly with the tightening of alcohol sales because it will lower the unnecessary alcohol-related trauma cases we often see at hospitals. We are hopeful that this resurgence will be over quickly," Booysen said.
