EC police avert “taxi war”

File

Eastern Cape police said they would continue to monitor the corridor between the province and Kwazulu Natal following reports of a looming taxi conflict.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Sibongile Soci, said they received information that members of a taxi association were planning to attack the vehicles of a competitor that was loading passengers from Pinetown in KZN to Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape.

She said the information investigated and police monitored the movements of those alleged to be involved in the plot.

Soci said on Monday night confirmation was received that a group of men had arrived in the province from KZN.

She said members of a multi-disciplinary team, including POPS members and Mbizana SAPS, conducted an operation Magusheni, near the town where they stopped and searched the men.

Soci said police found nine firearms, which were all licensed.  She said the suspected hitmen were then instructed to leave the area.

“Police will continue to monitor and intensify patrols in the area,” she said.
