The police's Anti-Gang Unit in Port Elizabeth's northern areas has arrested a 23-year-old gang affiliate for murder, attempted murder and the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu says members were patrolling in Gelvandale on Saturday afternoon and heard shots being fired close by.
She says as they approached a 4-way stop, they spotted a man firing shots, and as they got out of their vehicle, the suspect started firing at them.
They returned fire, wounding him in the groin.
A firearm with a partial serial number was confiscated.
Naidu says police were informed that a 50-year old woman was fatally wounded in Reynecke Street.
She says it is unclear at this stage who the suspect was shooting at when the woman was shot in the face while walking in the street.
The suspect is expected to appear in court soon.
