Gale force winds wreak havoc on EC Roads

The adverse weather conditions in the entire Eastern Cape, characterised largely by gale-force winds and very cold conditions have caused damage on some of the province's roads posing a danger to motorists.

EC Transport MEC, Weziwe Tikana has called for caution at all times among road users and for them to try and avoid travelling if they can, especially through mountain passes, as these less than ideal driving conditions are set to persist through the weekend.

Several issues have been reported:

  • A jackknifed truck is partially blocking the N6 between Jamestown and Queenstown at or near the Penhoek Pass.
  • A fallen down tree is blocking the N2 Nelson Mandela Drive in Mthatha.
  • A jackknifed truck is partially blocking one lane along the N2 between Grahamstown and Port Elizabeth near Rautenbach road.
  • Fallen down rocks and trees are blocking the N10 near the Olifantskop Pass.

No injuries were reported.

Meanwhile, Eskom says the winds have left, over 54 000 customers across the province without electricity supply.

Eskom technicians are working hard to restore electricity as soon as possible.
