Disaster management teams have been dispatched to parts of the Eastern Cape where gale force winds caused havoc in several towns.
Eastern Cape Police Disaster Management spokesperson, Captain John Fobian, says early reports on Thursday morning indicate that areas from Fort Beaufort to Alice and Debe Nek, have been affected.
He says there are reports of the roofs of houses being blown off, but a full assessment still needs to be made.
Meanwhile, Algoa FM News has been told that dozens of people in the Kat River Valley area have been hit hard by the storm.
Hertzog Primary School Principal, Anthony Venter, described chaotic scenes from Wednesday night as the storm struck.
He says a pregnant woman also lost her baby in the chaos.
"Around about 12 o'clock last night there was a hell of a wind that started blowing in the Kat River Valley, in Hertzog. Lots of the houses had their roofs blown off.The children and people had to flee. Some of the houses collapsed on top of them, but fortunately nobody was hurt. Currently people from Disaster Management are in the area and are going to assess the damage." says Venter.
Meanwhile, Eskom says storms on Wednesday night affected electricity supply to about 10 000 customers across the province.
Spokesperson Ntombekhaya Mafumbata says Eskom technicians are working hard to repair electricity disruptions to the affected areas that include Alice, Debenek, Binfield, Hogsback, Idutywa, Cofimvaba and Dordrecht.
She's appealed for patience and warned customers to treat all electrical connections as live at all times.
