Two G4S security guards have been shot and wounded following a dramatic cash-in-transit heist about 15 km from Stutterheim in the Eastern Cape.
Hawks spokesperson Captain Yolisa Mgolodela says both guards were robbed of their firearms before their vehicle was bombed with explosives on Tuesday afternoon.
She says the armoured vehicle was driving on the N6 from Komani to East London when gunmen forced it to stop.
The suspects who were driving in a white Toyota Hilux and white Isuzu Bakkie stopped at the scene and pulled the driver out of his vehicle before he was shot.
Captain Mgolodela says his crew member jumped out to check what was happening when he too was shot and wounded.
Both guards had their weapons stolen.
While the guards lay wounded on the ground the armoured vehicle was bombed with explosives and an undisclosed amount of money was taken.
Captain Mgolodela says the suspects fled in their bakkies in the direction of Sutterheim before taking a gravel road towards Dohne.
