Agri SA says it has secured funding to supply chemicals and spraying equipment to farmers to combat an outbreak of army worms.
Agri SA says because of the the high costs of insecticide and labour required to combat the pest, funding had been obtained from the Department of Agriculture, in collaboration with its Directorates of Agricultural Inputs Control and Disaster Risk Management.
It says new outbreaks of army worms are possible and farmers should contact their nearest extension office or provincial department of agriculture should this happen.
Earlier this month, Eastern Cape Rural Development MEC, Zoleka Capa, called for calm among farmers after a recent outbreak of army worms destroyed maize in parts of the OR Tambo District Municipality.
