Gqeberha police are investigating an incident at a Caltex garage in Markman Township in which a motorist filled up his tank with R1 000 worth of petrol and then drove off without paying.
Captain Gerda Swart says no formal charges were laid following Thursday’s incident, as the individual later returned to pay his bill.
A similar incident happened at another garage, in the same area when a taxi driver asked for R600 worth of fuel and then drove away from the scene without paying.
This incident was captured on CCTV camera and footage seen by AlgoaFM News shows only half the taxi’s number plate being visible.
South African motorists are literally being driven to despair with another massive fuel price hike predicted for June, but be that as it may, not paying for fuel is tantamount to theft and is a criminal offence.
At the moment, a litre of unleaded petrol costs R21.51, the highest it has ever been in the history of South Africa’s democracy.
Earlier this month, the Hawks announced that they had established a special Task Team to find a fuel theft syndicate responsible for stealing R5.5 million worth of diesel from a depot in Louis Trichardt in the Limpopo Province.
