African Christian Democratic Party councillor, Lance Grootboom, has laid a charge of fraud against the Speaker of the Nelson Mandela Bay Council, Buyelwa Mafaya.
This, after she cancelled Thursday’s special and ordinary Council Meeting, where a motion of no confidence in the mayor, Mongameli Bobani, was meant to be debated, among other Council business.
In a Watsapp message to Councillors early on Thursday morning, Mafaya informed Councillors that her decision to postpone the meeting was based on a security threat relayed by the South African Police Service.
This was however refuted by Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General, Liziwe Nthsinga in a statement on Thursday who said SAPS was operationally ready to deal with any situation.
Grootboom said that message sent by Speaker Mafaya had been a misrepresentation.
He said in his affidavit that in terms of common law, “the crime of fraud is defined as the unlawful and intentional making of a misrepresentation which causes actual prejudice or which is potentially prejudicial to another.”
Mafaya told Algoa FM News from Durban on Friday that she had not yet received any notice of the charge against her and would likely respond to this next week.
