The Association of Certified Fraud Examiners says the conviction rate in fraud cases is low because police officers are not well equipped to investigate them.
ACFE is one of several organisations taking part in a fraud awareness workshop that is being hosted by the Bhisho Government in East London on Thursday.
The Association's Jaco de Jager, outlines the difficulty in probing complex financial scams.
"Just to look at financial crimes is not that easy, if we look at the different types of scams that you can get, there are hundreds of scams and they are very complex as indicated in the Krion case, pyramide schemes even the EFT scams that hit the banking sector, so to explain that to some of the investigating officers that does not deal with this kind of crime everyday, it is very difficult to get them on board" de Jager said.
