Four robbers killed in shoot-out in PE bakery

Four armed robbers were shot and killed by a Port Elizabeth flying squad member inside the Le Bon bakery in Rose Street, Central, on Monday morning.

Two flying squad members had rushed to the scene shortly before 9 am after being alerted to a robbery in progress.

There was an exchange of gunfire in which one of the flying squad members was shot in the hand and twice in the abdomen by one of the suspects.

He is reportedly in a stable condition in hospital.

His partner then opened fire, killing four of the suspects.

Eastern Cape police spokesperson, Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana, says one suspect is still at large and that the 72 hour activation plan has been put in place to capture him.

Brigadier Kinana says three firearms were recovered on the scene and will be sent for ballistic testing to determine if they were used in the commission of any other crime in the Eastern Cape or elsewhere in the country.

There were several customers in the bakery at the time of the robbery and they were robbed of their cellphones and other personal items.

All these stolen items were also recovered on the scene.
