The Eastern Cape Department of Social Development has begun a probe into allegations of abuse of church members by the East London-based Endumisweni Faith Mission.
This, after a video went viral of a church elder flogging young congregants. The beating reportedly came after the girls posted a video of them dancing.
In a statement on Monday, Eastern Cape Social Development MEC, Dr. Pumza Dyantyi, said the Department team will investigate the “veracity of abuse at the church”.
She said the team will formulate a required statutory report and recommend to the MEC what action to take.
“No person or institution, including churches, is above the law. The Department, including other law-enforcement agencies, will ensure a relentless effort to obliterate the continued abuse of people at churches,” MEC Dyantyi said.
“My Department will ensure that someone is held accountable for such act of abuse,” she vowed.
