Four people have died, while 23 others sustained serious injuries when two vehicles collided on the R61 between Aberdeen and Beaufort West.
Eastern Cape Transport Department spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, said the crash occurred at around 05H45 on Monday.
He said both vehicles were travelling in the same direction when a midi-bus, with 27 occupants and a mini-bus, with 10 passengers, collided.
He said the midi-bus went out of control following the collision and overturned, killing four people.
“Twenty-three other passengers sustained injuries serious and slight injuries. All 10 occupants of the quantum escaped unharmed.
Binqose said the injured were taken to Aberdeen Hospital for treatment.
He said overloading may have been a factor as the midi-bus' legal seating capacity is 23 including the driver.
A case of culpable homicide will be opened by Aberdeen SAPS.
