Four people killed in horror EC accident

Four people were killed and several others injured in a horror accident on the N2 outside Port Elizabeth on Monday night.

Provincial traffic said that six vehicles were involved in the pile-up between Colchester and Kinkelbos at around 7.30pm, leading to the road being closed for several hours.

Provincial traffic spokesperson, Charles Bramwell, said that three light delivery vehicles, two cars and an articulated truck were involved in the smash.  He said the horse and trailer had landed on top of one of the LDV’s.

Bramwell said the four victims, two men and two women, were in one of the vehicles, said to be a Toyota Avanza which was “completed demolished” in the accident.

Police spokesperson, Captain Andre’ Beetge said “it is alleged that a Silver VW Polo overtook the vehicles in the direction of PE and into the path of an oncoming truck.”

“The vehicles swerved but collided head-on, going out of control and involved four other vehicles in the carnage,” he said.

Beetge said two men trapped in one of the vehicles had to be extricated and rushed to hospital with serious injuries.  “In total six persons had serious injuries and one 10-yer-old boy slightly injured.  Nine persons had no injuries, Beetge said.
