From thwarting the theatrics of a fleet-footed attempted housebreaker on the roof of a house in Chatty, nabbing seven suspected drunk drivers and issuing fines for numerous traffic offences, the Metro Police Ghost Squad made its presence felt this weekend.
Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Member of the Mayoral Committee for Safety and Security, Cllr John Best, said an attempted housebreaker was caught red-handed on the roof of a house in Bambie Street.
Best says a distraught resident rushed to the Metro Police satellite station in Bethelsdorp seeking protection.
The suspect was spotted on the roof by the responding officers and was soon arrested.
During a traffic stop on Saturday afternoon, the Squad arrested a 27-year-old taxi driver who had a total of 37 people crammed into the vehicle.
According to Best, the driver could not produce his permit and smelled strongly of alcohol. He recorded a reading of 0.66mg and was arrested on the spot.
Six other drivers were also arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol.
Best added that fines totalling R17 700 were issued which included offences like driving without a licence and driving unregistered and unroadworthy vehicles.
